What can I possibly say about the Black Dagger Brotherhood series that’s not been said already? Dark Lover, the first in the series is what Twilight wants to be when it grows up and leaves high school. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the sweet romance that is Twilight but you will find no sparkly, golden eye-d, day walking vampires here.
What we have here is Wrath, the last pure-blood vampire (others have some element of human blood) who whilst being almost blind, is six foot six inches tall and well over two hundred pounds of sheer muscle. He is the leader of the brotherhood who all have names like Rhage, Zsadist, Vishous and Phury, those sworn to protect their kind from anyone who would do them harm, but specifically Lessers, a group of soulless, undead vampire hunters.
There was another brother; Darius and he has a daughter, Elizabeth who doesn’t know what she will become and as such, Darius asks Wrath to teach her what she needs to know.
That’s the first of a few interesting twists on vampire lore. You’re either born a vampire, transitioning into your abilities in your mid twenties or you’re not. There isn’t biting, swapping blood and all that. Vampire wannabes need not apply. And Beth, as she calls herself, is days away from her transition.
Initially Wrath refuses, until he feels he owes a debt and does decide to look in on her at which point he is completely smitten with her. From then on follows a love story of how a warrior, an alpha male of the first degree tries to deny his feelings for his brother’s daughter whilst at the same time guiding her through her metamorphosis. Not only does Beth not make it easy for him to try and shrug her off, but they also have to contend with the work of the lessers. Work that the police in the shape of one hard-boiled detective thinks Wrath did as part of a drugs gang.
The lesser story isn’t really that important as it’s just a plot device. The real story and it’s a hot, passionate one is the love story between Wrath and Beth. If you thought Edward and Bella are sweet (and they are), these two crank the heat up to scorching!
