The Mane Event actually contains two stories; Christmas Pride and Shaw’s Tail that introduce to the New York Llewellyn lion pride and part of the Smith wolf pack that have broken off from their roots in Tennessee.
Christmas Pride tells the story of Mace Llewellyn who has just returned from a 14 year stint in the Navy to get away from his family, specifically his sisters but upon returning to his family’s home, meets up with the woman of his dreams, the girl he fell in love with back in high school, Desiree ‘Dez’ MacDermot, now a NYPD detective. Also a full human with no idea that Mace is a lion shifter.
Both are thrown together after one of the Llewellyn pride’s breeding males is killed and it’s not long before Dez is introduced to the world of lion-, wolf- and hyena-shifters.
Shaw’s Tail follows directly on from the events in Christmas Pride but the view point shifts to Brendon Shaw, another lion shifter and Ronnie Lee Reed, a member of the Smith pack who is looking to settle down with a nice wolf mate and certainly not a lion shifter.
Both of these stories are typically Shelly Laurenston which means that they contain alpha male heroes, wilful and strong heroines who come together for some very steamy loving and are laugh out loud hilarious.
I actually found Shaw’s Tail the funnier of the two if only for the scene with a drugged out lion dancing and being playful.
It’s not necessary to have read the Magnus Pack series in order to fully enjoy this but it’s recommended because not only they are brilliant, they introduce the shifter world more fully. I can’t wait to read the next one.
