The Beast In Him (Pride, #2)The Beast In Him by Shelly Laurenston
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The first book in the Pride series contained a lion / human pairing and a lion / wolf pairing but The Beast in Him, the second in the series, contains just one, a wolf / wild dog pairing. We already met Bobby Ray Smith ‘Smitty’ to most, in the previous book who, along with his former service buddy Mace, set up a private security firm and this is how he re-connects with Jessie Ann Ward who he’s not seen since breaking her heart sixteen years previously before he left to sign up.

In fact, not only does he realise just who his firm is providing security for but he’s also not prepared for the fact that the girl who his sister and her she-wolves used to bully regularly back at school is now alpha of her pack and not only that, but he’s devastated that she barely recognises him. Him! Of course, this just winds him up and he has to find out why.

And what ensues is the typical trademark Shelly Laurenston story of two people who are destined to end up as life long mates. Assuming that they don’t kill each other first. Not a single character in these stories is entirely sane, but a funnier bunch you couldn’t hope to meet. All the characters from the first book are here and even Sara from the Magnus Pack series makes a brief, but memorable appearance.

I’m not sure why, but I didn’t think this was as good a book as I’ve come to expect from this author but that still makes it a very funny and very hot tale and I’ll still be getting the next in the series!
