No Rest for the Wicked
No Rest for the Wicked by Kresley Cole
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

No Rest for the Wicked the third in the excellent Immortals After Dark series is pretty much representative of a perfect paranormal romance novel for me.

Kaderin the Cold Hearted has been mentioned previously and is called such because after the loss of her sisters during a vampire battle a millennia ago she has felt nothing. No joy or happiness or even sorrow, something that can kill a valkyrie. In turn, this makes her a very efficient vampire hunter and her collection of fangs from her kills is frightening. So unlike some other romance novels that portray the heroine as a damsel waiting for someone to rescue her, Kaderin is a very capable woman and it’ll take someone special to be her match.

Enter the hero, Sebastian Wroth he’s Nikolai’s (of Nicolai Wroth and Myst the Coveted) younger brother, who hates what he is having been turned into a vampire against his will. Seeing a chance to end his existence when Kaderin tracks him down things start going awry when she starts to feel emotion again for the first time in centuries and denies him what he seeks.

Unlike the previous two books where one was about to wipe a valkyries’s mind and another where the hero kidnapped his mate, Sebastian simply used the method of honesty and persistence. An alpha male in every sense at no time did he mistreat Kaderin. Granted, there were times when she drove him crazy and he wanted to but he never did. Anyone else who got in the way of him or Kaderin wasn’t so lucky.

But things are never that simple, are they? For they find each other at the time of the Hie, a month long contest in which creatures of the lore fight each other to obtain a powerful prize, something Kaderin has won every time for a long time. However, the prize this time is the ability to change history which means that she go back and get her sisters. But if she wins, she will lose Sebastian.

As with any romance, not only did I want the hero and heroine to overcome the various obstacles not least of which is Kaderin being a pre-eminent vampire hunter and him being, well, a vampire, to reach their HEA but I also wanted her to win the hie due to what was at stake. Family re-united or love? Decisions, decisions!

Previous characters also make a delightful return from Regin the Radiant, Emmaline, Bowen, ‘Nucking Futs’ Nix and, as previously mentioned, Nikolai Wroth and Myst the Coveted.
